These days I tend toward investment purchasing wherever I can. That goes for everything from sofas to skincare. I purchase the highest quality I can reasonably afford. Sometimes this means I have to put off a purchase until I’ve set enough money aside to accommodate it. But I would still rather do that than purchase the nearest knock-off I can find at Target knowing it will need replaced this time next month.
Over time this mentality has permeated my beauty purchasing. Long gone are the days when any sweet-smelling lotion would do. I started to realize that Buy 3 Get 2 Free did me no good if none of them actually did a thing to moisturize my skin. I started to care a lot more about ingredients that actually perform as promised.
On a mission, I expended a lot of time and energy sampling skincare for both face and body. Many were effective, many did nothing, and still more were fine, but lackluster enough that I’ve already forgotten them.
What I’ve finally tripped over that I felt was worth sharing is the AHAVA® line of products. Yes, the line of products.
I first discovered AHAVA® during Vlogmas last year. I received a free sample of their original Mineral Hand Cream. Like most of the samples I get when I order from Ulta or Sephora, I didn’t think much of it; I use them in a pinch, and otherwise they accumulate in a vanity drawer. And, for the most part, I find the effectiveness of most hand creams extremely disappointing.
Much to my surprise, I couldn’t find a single negative thing to say about the Mineral Hand Cream. It absorbed quickly. So quickly in fact that I expected I would need to reapply within the hour; not so. My hands were soft and supple for hours. I could still feel the effects of the cream even after I’d washed my hands.
At Christmastime, when a family member was complaining of dry skin around the feet and ankles, I did some investigating and found the AHAVA Dermud Foot Cream. I gave this as a stocking stuffer and was told it worked wonders.
Since then I’ve sampled their Beauty Before Age Uplift Day and Night Cream; Dead Sea Crystal Osmoter X6 Facial Serum; Time to Clear Purifying Mud Mask; Mineral Body Lotion; Time to Smooth Age Perfecting Hand Cream with SPF 15; and Mineral Hand Cream in Prickly Pear & Moringa scent.
Granted, the only items on that list that I purchased full-size were the Mineral Body Lotion and Time to Smooth hand cream, and those I caught on sale. But I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for another sale to purchase more of the others.
AHAVA’s secret seems to be packing its products with active minerals from the Dead Sea. Having been hounded at malls by the Dead Sea Spa kiosk workers for years, any time I read “Dead Sea” in relation to a skin care product I’m inclined to close the browser. But I read on anyway, reasoning that the class evident in AHAVA®’s marketing surely placed it a step above the vultures that await you as you pass their kiosk.
Rather than paraphrase and risk losing the important bits, here is an explanation from AHAVA®’s website about the value in Dead Sea minerals:
Why are minerals so healthy for the skin?
Minerals provide the syntax for the skin’s natural language, enabling inter-cellular messaging and helping the skin to better perform its metabolic functions and retain and deliver moisture where necessary. Vital to the skin’s healthy function are magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium, which attract and retain water and are therefore considered to be Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF).
What is so special about the Dead Sea?
The Dead Sea is the Earth’s largest natural spa. Located on the lowest point of the planet (410 meters below sea level), it abounds with a variety of minerals with proven therapeutic powers and cosmetic benefits. The life-giving waters of the Dead Sea contain the highest concentration of minerals in the world—an astounding 32%. Its sedimentary clay layers of rich, black mineral mud yield extraordinary concentrations of natural elements (ten times more than ocean water)—such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, strontium, boron and iron—that are essential to maintaining healthy, supple skin. Finally, the exceptionally low altitude provides for a dense blanket of pure, pollution-free oxygen that supplies added protection in filtering out the sun’s harmful rays. These are only some of the reasons why people come from all over the world to enjoy this magical, health-enhancing oasis.
Ordinarily I would write this off as hokum written for the sake of advertising. But the biggest thing that has stood out to me about AHAVA® is the consistent effectiveness across their entire line of products. The body lotion truly absorbs, leaving my skin feeling genuinely soft and velvety, rather than sitting in a layer on the surface that I can feel dissolving the next time I step into the shower. The day and night facial creams absorb likewise, and I’ve already mentioned the hand lotions.
As I hinted at the start of this post, the sticker price on these items is steep. But I circle back to the point about investment purchasing. Would you rather cut back on your latte habit for a few weeks and invest $60 in face cream that’s effective, or spend your usual $10 to slather on a product that is likely 80% water?
Learn to watch for sales and play your coupons appropriately. At the beginning of the summer, AHAVA® was running a 40% site-wide sale. At the time of this writing, the AHAVA® website is having a BOGO sale. Use code BOGO, but be advised it only applies to one product. (Meaning you can get two of the same product for the price of one, but you can’t buy a face cream and get a body lotion for free.)
Learn to value quality over quantity in everything. You’ll be happier with yourself for how you’ve spent your money, and as a bonus, in this case it will declutter your bathroom. (And the cabinet under your bathroom sink. And probably the overflow of useless products living in your linen closet as well.)
